Roy and Heywood Win Big on Opening Day; Terry, Fountain, English, Whitney and Friend Join Winning Cast

PLATTSBURGH, NY.-- Felix Roy and Nick Heywood impressed a huge opening day crowd with convincing wins during Airborne Park Speedway’s 71st season opener on Sunday. Joining them in victory lane were familiar winners Tylor Terry and Jake Fountain, with Gary English, Jr., Jamie Whitney, Jr., and Eric Friend also claiming checkered flags.
Roy drew the No. 1 starting position after a dominating heat race win, backed by a fast time trial effort. His front row compatriot was Jack Gill, a young driver from Plessis making his first start at “The Big A.”
Roy led from the jump on a single file start following two cautions before lap one could be completed. Gill paced him from a ways back with Jeremy Roy in 3rd and Mat Williamson running 4th. Upon the first double-file restart, Gill made gains in the middle hanging with Felix Roy while Williamson secured 3rd from Jeremy Roy. As the 40-lapper went on, drivers like Demetrios Drellos, Adam Pierson, Tim Fuller, Chris Raabe and Billy Dunn ebbed and flowed on the outside and middle lanes, making progress inside the top 10.
Caution flags prevented the leaders from catching lapped traffic until the end of the race, and with a handful of laps remaining, Felix Roy was tip-toeing around the bottom waiting for a break in the traffic. Gill and Jeremy Roy battled fiercely for 2nd position behind Felix, and Jeremy secured 2nd in the final two laps, closing in on brother Felix. But, at the checkered flag, Felix Roy held on for the win. Jeremy Roy was 2nd, making a great day for the Napierville, Quebec race team. Gill was 3rd with Tim Fuller 4th and Mike Mahaney 5th. Mat Williamson encountered a problem and pulled off around halfway.
The J&S Steel Sportsman feature was led to green by Fire Swamp and Matt Leonard following top-12 redraw. Swamp led nearly the first half of the race, which got off to a fast start. Nick Heywood started 6th and had made his way to 2nd after winning his heat race and caught up to Swamp in lapped traffic. The pair traded the lead briefly, and then contact between Nick Heywood and the slower car of Lonnie Rivers brought out the caution, setting up a restart. Heywood chose the bottom and charged away with Swamp losing 2nd to Bucko Branham, before wrestling it back from the veteran in the closing laps. Donovan Lussier got himself in trouble early, going off track and dropping to 16th position and charged his way back towards the front, but it was all behind Heywood who drove away with the 30-lap, $2,000 victory. Swamp was 2nd with Lussier taking 3rd from 4th place finisher Branham late in the race. Matt Leonard finished 5th.
The 9th State Cannabis Renegade feature was won by Tylor Terry. Terry started 3rd on the grid and passed 2024 track champion and polesitter Shawn Duquette just shy of halfway. From there, Duquette, Tyler Irwin, Brad Bushey and Josh Terry all engaged each other for spots 2-5. Like in the sportsman feature, contact between Tyler Irwin and a slower car brought out a caution flag, setting up a restart on lap 17. Tylor Terry chose the bottom and Irwin was 2nd on the outside lane. Irwin bested Terry, taking the lead in turn one, but an incident before the lap was completed halted the action, handing Tylor Terry the lead for a single-file restart.
Shawn Duquette then went back to the whip, taking 2nd position back from Irwin. He closed the gap on Terry and earned himself a shot at the win, but he came up just short of the opening day checkered flag. Tylor Terry took the win with Duquette 2nd and Irwin 3rd. Billy Thwaits wrestled the No. 30 car to 4th and Josh Terry was 5th.
In limited sportsman action, Salisbury, VT’s Gary English took home the win, leading all 15 laps of the feature after winning the heat race. Young Raelin Dunham was 2nd with Logan Denis 3rd. Kobe Hernandez, Parker Dermody and Lea-Jeanne Lauziere completed the field.
The mini stocks again put on a fantastic show with 31 cars in attendance. Glenn Engstrom and Jake Fountain had the front row of the 25-car A-feature, and Fountain jumped out in front early. He established a healthy advantage before a caution came out for Haiden Bordeau and Kyle Hart spun around in turn two. On the restart, Engstrom hung with Fountain and looked like he may be able to make a move for the win, but he was stymied as Fountain picked up the pace in the closing laps to score the victory. Engstrom was 2nd and Chad Provost was 3rd. Josh LaPorte, Sr., was 4th and Brandon Osher was 5th. Jamie Whitney, Jr., won the B-feature, earning the right to 25th starting position in the A-main, advancing up to 17th.
The crown vic feature was won by Eric Friend. Scott Richner and Norm Morrill led the field to green with Morrill taking the lead, but Friend and veteran driver Richie Turner quickly climbed toward the front, each passing Morrill down the backstretch. They swapped the lead a few different times, leaning on each other and racing hard, occasionally slipping by the slower cars of Richner, Jaycee Turner and Elisabeth DuPont. Friend came out on top with Richie Turner right on his heels late in the going. Morrill was 3rd with DuPont 4th, Richner 5th and Jaycee Turner, Richie’s daughter, rounding out the field in her competitive debut.
