Stone picks up first win of the season at Airborne Park

Plattsburgh, N.Y-Justin Stone overcame a carburetor issue in his heat race along with a series of restarts at Airborne Park Speedway during this week’s edition of “Thursday Night Thunder,” but it wasn’t enough to keep him out of victory lane. The Middlebury, Vermont driver was able to fend off all challengers to put his 15x into the Egglefield Ford victory lane for the first time this season in the 358 modified division.

Stone started the 30-lap feature on the outside of row one alongside pole sitter Tanner Siemons. Stone didn’t waste any time getting to the point as he powered away from Siemons off of turn number two on lap one and set the early pace.

After a restart on lap four, Stone quickly opened a half-straightaway lead and was driving away from the pack. On a restart with eight circuits to go, Fornwalt had his best shot at the lead, drag racing side by side with Stone, won the backstretch before Stone took control back off of turn four. A restart on lap 23 found defending track champion Mike Mahaney breathing down his neck, but despite “Smooth Shoe” pushing his car to the edge, Stone held on to become the third winner in three events on the season.

Mahaney came across the finish line second, Felix Roy third, Fornwalt fourth, and Chris Rabbe fifth. Heat winners were Siemons, Greg Atkins, and Fornwalt.

Defending track champion Donovan Lussier stayed red hot in the J & S Steel sportsman modified division as he roared from the 19th starting spot to nab his second feature win of the season. Brent Warren appeared to be the car to beat in the early laps, but Lussier sliced his way through the field rapidly and was sitting in the top five by lap eight. Lussier slipped past Vince Quennville for the third spot on lap 12 and disposed of Jason McClatchie for second on lap 15.

Two laps later, Lussier dove to the inside of Warren to take the lead and cruised to the checkered flag to add to his lengthening season resume. Warren held on for second. Nick Haywood was third, McClatchie fourth, and Quenneville fifth.

Jamy Begor, Lonnie Rivers, and Chris Cayea collected heat race wins.

The mini stocks took center stage next as they rolled onto the racing surface for their 15-lap feature. A week ago, Jp Corrow picked up his first career feature win. Corrow enjoyed it so much that he decided to do it again. Corrow navigated his way through the field from the 10th position on the grid and made it back-to-back trips to victory lane.

Jamie Whitney Jr. led the early laps, but Corrow was on a mission, weaving in and out of traffic with confidence as he headed toward the front. The only hindrance for Corrow was finding running room as cars ran side by side in front of him. Corrow avoided disaster when he got together with Kyle Botala on lap nine, but was able to save his machine and move into the second spot. A lap later, Corrow wrestled the top spot away from Whitney and was poised to pull away, but a multi-car incident on the front stretch brought out the caution. On the ensuing restart, Corrow found a new second-place car to challenge him, driven by Josh Blake. Blake didn’t allow Corrow to pull away by more than three car lengths, but couldn’t reel him in.

Blake finished second, followed by Botala, Whitney, and Nick Harnden. Heat wins went to Whitney, Harnden, and Corrow.

Makaela Goddeau won the B Feature to advance to the main event.

Garin Thompson led the majority of the race and held off a last-ditch effort from Gary English Jr. to claim the win in the limited sportsman feature event. Thompson passed Parker Dermody for the lead three laps in and seemed to be able to put his machine on cruise control. English Jr. however, had other plans. He slipped by Dermody with four laps remaining and pulled in his nose beside Thompson coming to the stripe, but came up just a little short. It was the first win for Thompson in his young racing career.

The Ninth State Cannisbis renegades did double duty on this night as they also made up last week’s rained-out feature. In the first 20-lap contest, Shawn Duqueutte overtook pacesetter Shawn Fountain on the backstretch on lap nine and began to run away. A caution flag on the next lap bunched the field back up and handed Fountain another shot at the lead, but Duquette extended the margin back out after the restart. The 2024 track champion was never challenged again.

Fountain finished second, Tylor Terry third. Zach Daniels and Nate Guay rounded out the top five.

Duquette headed to the nightcap looking for the renegade sweep, but it wasn’t meant to be. Josh Terry set the early pace before being passed for the lead by Tyler Irwin at the halfway point. Tylor Terry got past his brother on lap 12 and set his sights on Irwin. Terry grabbed the lead from Irwin on lap 14 and held off the field over the final six trips around “The Big A.” Irwin held off Josh Terry for third. Fountain was fourth and Brad Bushey fifth.

Heat race winners were Bushey and Tylor Terry.

Spectator races entertained the crowd during the intermission portion of the show, with RJ Revara capturing the win over Brian Kentile, and Dylan Steady.

The busy month of May continues at Airborne Speedway on Thursday night, May 15th with the Renegade Special for 40 laps and $500 to win.
