Begor Making Move to Modifieds at Airborne

PLATTSBURGH, NY – Jamy Begor is no stranger to stock car racing at Airborne Park Speedway, but he’ll be a rookie all over again in 2015. The long-time Mooers Forks, NY racer has plans to run for Rookie of the Year honors in the track’s NASCAR Whelen All-American Series J&S Steel Modified division.

Begor has taken delivery of what he described as a “flawless” Bicknell chassis from former racer Jeff Clodgo and will tackle the open-wheel cars for the first time. His résumé includes 15 victories and several top-three championship finishes in the former Tiger Sportsman/Limited Late Model class, a pair of Street Stock titles, and three Renegade wins last summer. Begor tested the Modified waters at New Hampshire’s Star Speedway last June, driving a car owned by Speedway Illustrated magazine Editor Karl Fredrickson.

“That race at Star was a lot of fun, and that’s what got the ball rolling with wanting to race Modifieds,” Begor said. “I’ve always driven cars with the number 19 and this will be my 19th year racing, so I wanted to do something special and different. We’re even changing colors; I’ve always run black and red paint schemes, but this car is such a pretty shade of blue that we’re keeping it. The Modified division at Airborne is a great, competitive division, and I think there’s a big opportunity to have some fun and make some good money through NASCAR if we can be competitive.”

Indeed, Begor’s eyes are at least partially fixed on some of the prize money available through the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series program at Airborne and other tracks in the region. Airborne track champion Nick Heywood clinched the NASCAR National Rookie of the Year presented by Jostens title in 2014 and pocketed more than $12,000 in total post-season awards.

“There’s going to be a big learning curve, but the car that I have is a beautiful piece of equipment. It’s really flawless,” Begor said. “I’m hoping to get a few top-10 or top-15 finishes early on as we learn the car, and hopefully we’ll be a threat to win by mid-season.”

Begor’s No. 19 team will again be led by crew chief Dean Surprenant in the pits, with Beth Begor, Tim Surprenant, Kyle Denault, and Roger Trombley alongside; parents Larry and Norma Begor lead the cheering section. Sponsors include Huntley Trucking in Cadyville, Begor’s Supply in Mooers, Conner’s Sand Pit in Morrisonville, and Begor’s Seamless Gutters in Lake Placid.

Airborne Park Speedway’s 62nd season of stock car racing opens on Saturday, May 2. Airborne is located on Broderick Road in South Plattsburgh, NY, one mile from Exit 36 on the Interstate 87 Northway.
