Airborne Park Speedway

Hebert, Corrow, and Aubin Claim “Thursday Night Thunder” Openers

Plattsburgh, N.Y.-David Hebert, is a threat to win everywhere he unloads his race car. Airborne Park Speedway is no exception. The St. Damase, Quebec native placed his ride in the position to strike, took advantage of a tire issue on Jeremy Roy’s machine, then held off the hot pursuit of Carey Terrence to claim the checkered flag in the 35-lap 358 modified feature during the first edition of “Thursday Night Thunder for 2025.

It’s not like Hebert is a stranger to seeing the checkered flag waving over his car. The veteran wheelman is coming off a historic season where he collected his 200th career win, cementing his legacy as one of dirt track racing’s most decorated drivers.

The racing surface was tacky with a ton of bite as Terrence and Jeremy Roy led the field to the green flag, and Roy quickly powered his way to the point. Roy seemed well on his way to following in the footsteps of his brother Felix, who dominated on opening night. The oldest of the Roy siblings quickly established a nearly straightaway lead over the rest of the field and was forced to navigate lapped traffic after only 10 laps. He led the first 26 circuits before his comfortable lead evaporated when the caution flag came out on the speedway.

During the caution period, Roy vacated the lead after heading to the pit with a left rear tire issue. That was the opportunity that Hebert was looking for. Hebert and Terrence began the restart side by side, with defending track champion Mike Mahaney lurking.

Hebert quickly pounced, getting a great jump off turn four and building a 10-car advantage. Despite pushing his car to the limit, Terrance, who was making his season debut, could not reel in Hebert and settled for a second-place finish. Mahaney held off Felix Roy for third. Tim Fuller rounded out the top five. Jeremy Roy rallied for a ninth-place finish after returning with new left-rear rubber.

A first-time winner drove into victory lane in the 15-lap mini stock feature event. After a 19th-place finish in his previous start, Jp Corrow of Peru, N.Y., survived a hard-fought battle with Jeremiah King and Tyler Bell to capture the checkered flag.

Nick Harnden launched from the second row and set the early pace before the yellow came out for a four-car melee on the front stretch on lap two, and the field came under red flag conditions.

On the restart, Harnden held on to the lead temporarily, but Corrow wrestled the position away from him with an outside move on lap six. Corrow had little time to enjoy his conquest as King and Bell were on the move. After a restart on lap 10, Bell flexed his muscles, swinging to the outside on turn two and passing both Corrow and King with five laps to go.

Bell’s advantage was short-lived as Corrow and King overtook him on the next lap, and those two battled door handle to door handle for the final four laps before Corrow beat King to the finish line by a car length.

Bell hung on for third, Nathan Smart was fourth, and Josh LaPorte fifth.

The drivers in the 25-lap J & S Steel sportsman modified feature not only had to contend with each other, but the showers that were beginning to settle in over the top of the speedway. The drops of precipitation didn’t hinder Plattsburgh, N.Y.’s Codie Aubin as he took control early and was never seriously challenged.

The main question for the remainder of the event was whether any of the division’s hot shoes could work their way through the field to challenge Aubin. The answer was a resounding “no” as Aubin dominated from green to checkers to earn his first trophy since 2023 after going winless a year ago.

Defending track champion Donovan Lussier gained 16 positions after starting 18th to nab the second spot. Michael Wright was consistently in the top 5 all night as he followed Lussier across the line in third. Robert Laware, who started on the front row, placed fourth with Travis Bruno charging from the 16th starting position to round out the top five.

Mother Nature wiped out the final two features of the evening for the 9th State Cannabis Renegades and the limited sportsman. Those races will be made up on the front end of next week and the following weeks schedule.

Airborne Park Speedway is back in action this Thursday, May 8th, at 7 p.m., featuring the 358 modifieds and all weekly divisions. The always popular Street Legal Spectator Races will also be on the card. General admission is $15, kids 12 and under get in for free! Pit passes are $30 for Airborne Park members and $40 for non-members.
