Heartbreak for Fuller, as Mahaney Wins at Airborne on Thursday Night

Plattsburgh, NY- For 27 laps of Thursday night’s DirtCar 358 Modified feature at Airborne Park Speedway, Tim Fuller appeared to be on his way to a dominating victory. Conversely, Mike Mahaney seemed content to accept a respectable third-place finish. That line of thinking turned out to be premature. With three laps remaining, Fuller’s car lost power on the front stretch, ending his night, and Mahaney was able to take advantage of the Hall of Famer’s heartbreak to claim his first win of the season at “The Big A.” After a slow start to the season, it was the third feature win in six days for “Smooth Shoe.”
George Foley held the early lead, but Dave Camara slipped past him on lap 7. Fuller grabbed the top spot from Camara on lap 14 and quickly opened up an apparent insurmountable advantage until his engine expired in the closing stages. Thomas Cook assumed the lead after Fuller’s woes, but after the restart, Mahaney took the Adirondack Auto machine to the high side and used the momentum to power past Cook down the front stretch. Mahaney pulled away over the final two circuits to reach the checkered flag first. Felix Roy also got around Cook to finish second. Cook, Justin Stone, who charged from the 13th spot, and Camara rounded out the top five.
In the 25-lap J&S Steel Sportsman Modified feature, Jason McClatchie captured an extremely popular win, his first in an open-wheel car at Airborne, after moving up from the Renegade division. Brett Warren and McClatchie led the field to the green with Warren on the point for the first five laps. Incidents on laps 5 and 7 eliminated top points drivers Donovan Lussier and Nick Heywood, opening the door for other contenders to gain ground. McClatchie took command on the first restart, but Lonnie Rivers was on the move. Rivers passed Warren for second on lap 9 and set his sights on McClatchie. Rivers was able to pull underneath the frontrunner when he slipped high with 18 to go, but McClatchie drove off over the final 6 laps to earn a trip to victory lane. Rivers was second. Warren held on for third, Evan Roberts fourth, and Charlotte Morin fifth.
In the Limited Sportsmen feature, Garin Thompson celebrated his high school graduation with his second win of the season. Thompson started outside of row one next to another recent graduate, Parker Dermody. Thompson snatched the lead from Dermody right from the drop of the green flag and drove off into the night for a convincing victory. The best battle on the race track was going on in Thompson’s rearview mirror as Dermody and another fellow graduate, Kobe Hernandez, slugged it out from laps 7 to 10. Dermody eventually distanced himself from Hernandez to take the second spot. Lea-Jeanne Lauziere placed fourth and Michael Block fifth.
The 9th State Cannabis Renegade drivers put on their weekly thrilling show, with Josh Terry outdueling Roland Guay for the 20-lap feature win. It was the first win of the season for Terry, who switched out his new black car for his orange car of last season to grab a flag-to-flag win. Terry and Guay began the race from the front row and were glued together for much of the contest. Terry opened up a slight lead over the early laps, but Guay closed the deficit to less than a car length with six laps remaining. Guay briefly got his front bumper ahead of Terry in turn two on lap 16, but Terry had too much horsepower down the backstretch, held off the threat, and never was threatened again. Roland Guay’s brother, Nathan, had the best seat in the house for the fight for the win and crossed the line in third. Behind the top three, a fierce engagement took place between Shawn Duquette and Tylor Terry for the fourth and fifth positions, with Duquette coming out on top.
The evening concluded with a late surge by Jp Corrow, who earned his third win of the season in the mini stock division. Corrow methodically weaved his way through the pack and was ready to pounce when the opportunity presented itself in the final segment. Jeremiah King rolled to a significant lead in the early laps and looked as though he was on cruise control. However, a pair of late cautions changed everything. With several cars being dropped from contention after a lap 9 incident, Corrow found himself suddenly in the top five after starting 11th. Corrow moved to second on lap 12 and used an outside move to overtake King at the stripe with the popsicle stick flags signaling two laps remaining. Corrow held on from there to take home a win that seemed improbable a few laps earlier. King was awarded for this strong run with a second-place finish. Speedy Bressette charged from 16th to place third. Jamie Whitney was fourth and Matthew Parker fifth.
Airborne Park Speedway is back in action on Thursday, July 3rd, featuring “Independence Day Celebration” fireworks, the $2000 to win Firecracker 44 for Sportsman, $1000 to win for Pro Stocks, and a 50-lap Enduro. General admission is $20, kids 12 and under get in free! Pit passes are $35 for members and $45 for non-members.
