Felix Roy Holds off Fuller, Clinches Canadian Big Block Series Crown

Plattsburgh, NY-There may have been an autumn-like chill in the air, but the fans on hand were treated to some of the hottest racing of the season. The Canadian Big Block Series invaded Airborne Park Speedway on Sunday evening and crowned its champion, while the battles for the track championships at Airborne Park took some interesting twists and turns.

Felix Roy entered the fourth and final stop for the Canadian Big Block Series trailing David Hebert by a narrow 12 points. Michael Parent and William Racine sat just 36 and 38 points behind Hebert, and were both still clinging to championship aspirations. When the night ended, Roy had not only captured the feature win and the $4,000 first place check, but wore the WWE-inspired title belt around his waist as well.

Racine threw down the opening gauntlet as he opened up a commanding advantage for the first 20 laps until his car rolled to a stop in turn two, ending his night. Jack Speshock seized control on the ensuing restart and held the point for the next 21 circuits. Behind Speshock, Mike Mahaney, and Roy were staging an intense dogfight for the second spot. “Hollywood” eventually claimed the position and zeroed in on Speshock. Roy slipped around Speshock on lap 42, and Mahaney followed suit three laps later. As they had been all summer, Roy and Mahaney were locked nose to tail with each other for the next 20 laps, but Tim Fuller was lurking. Fuller had moved from 12th to 5th by the halfway mark, and flew past a fading Mahaney with 11 to go. Fuller hounded Roy for the remaining laps but could not find a way around the Napierville, Quebec campaigner. Hebert’s night and championship hopes came to a heartbreaking conclusion when his ride lost power on lap 74. Fuller had one last shot at Roy on a green-white-checkered restart, but as hard as he tried could not overtake the leader. Jackson Gill used a dramatic late move to nab third, followed by Mahaney and Chris Raabe.

It has been a frustrating season for Fire Swamp, but the Akwesasne, NY driver finally found his way to victory lane, holding off Michael Wright to earn the hardware in the J&S Steel Sportsman feature. Swamp and Robert Laware led the field to the green flag, with Swamp jumping to the early lead and threatening to drive away to an easy win. Three-time winner Donovan Lussier rapidly advanced from his tenth position on the grid to third and then wrestled second away from Jamy Begor. Wright soon came back to engage Lussier and managed to overtake him for the runner-up spot. Lussier was forced pitside in the late stages, eliminating him from contention. A late yellow flag handed Wright another opportunity to steal the top spot, but Swamp’s machine was on rails on this night as he held on for the win. Wright, Travis Bruno, Nick Heywood, and Begor rounded out the top five. Heywood entered the night with a narrow five-point advantage over Lussier, but that will increase with Lussier credited with a 13th-place finish.

The pro stocks were in the house for the fourth time this year, with the field trying to solve Zack Daniels, who had dominated the last two times the division visited the speedway. It was not to be, however, as Daniels fended off challenges from Marc Lalonde and Kyle Hoard to secure the three-peat. Ian Bressett led the opening lap, but by the second trip around the track, Daniels had retained his customary hold at the front of the pack. Hoard attempted to stay with Daniels and did it quite well for the majority of the event. Lalonde passed Hoard on lap 21 and moved up to challenge Daniels. The stiff competition did not faze Daniels as he maintained his stronghold on the division with another impressive performance. Lalonde was second, Hoard third, past winner Denis Gauvreau fourth, and Marc Peladeau fifth.

Tylor Taylor remained nearly unbeatable as he won for the seventh time this season, and second in a row in the 9th State Cannabis Renegade feature. Roland Guay jumped from the pole to lead the first five laps, but Terry was on the prowl. Terry cleared Guay on lap six and drove off into the night to strengthen his spot at the top of the Airborne Park winner’s list for any division in 2025. Billy Thwaits had his best outing of the season and came up to do his best to challenge Terry, but the No. 44 was too stout once again. Thwaits crossed the line second, followed by Shawn Duquette, Nathaniel Guay, and Tyler Irwin.

Gary English suffered through a dry spell over the middle part of the season, but he is catching fire again. English won three times in the early part of the season, but then cooled off. After a win on Vermont 200 weekend at Devil’s Bowl, English returned to victory lane at Airborne Park in the Hoosier Racing Tire Limited Sportsman main event. Parker Dermody, who was searching for his first win of the year, leaped to the top spot when the green flag flew and stayed there for the first 15 laps. Meanwhile, English was on the move, powering his way around Brogan Roberts and Garin Thompson to advance to second. English came up to confront Dermody during the middle stage of the race. Dermody didn’t make it easy on English, but eventually succumbed to the Salisbury, Vt veteran driver on lap 16. English fought off Dermody for the final five laps to add another tally to his win total. Dermody, Kobe Hernandez, Roberts, and Adam LaFountain completed the top five.

The Mini Stock points race saw three of the top contenders all taken out in the same wreck, and when the checkered flag flew on the carnage-filled feature, Tyler Bell had secured his first win at the track in improbable fashion. Randy Martin drove around Jamie Whitney Jr. on lap two and appeared to be cruising to an easy win. Even with several incidents taking place behind him, Martin clearly had the car to beat as he pulled away to significant leads after every restart. Then disaster struck. While zipping down the backstretch and into turn three on the final lap, Martin’s car suddenly veered off the raceway. Bell was the beneficiary as he outraced Speedy Bresette and Nick Harnden to the finish line to survive the war of attrition. Championship hopefuls Ryan Senecal, Jp Corrow, and Jake Fountain all were unable to continue after getting caught up in a melee on lap nine. Rounding out the top five were Brandon Osher and Josh Blake.

The Crown Vic division also made an appearance on this night, with Richie Turner edging Eric Friend for the feature win. Friend has been the Cream of the Crop all season long, winning more times than not, but Turner was not to be denied. Friend sat on the pole, which usually spells trouble for the rest of the field, but Turner rapidly grabbed the top spot and never trailed after that. Friend closed in on the back bumper of Turner on a couple of occasions, but could not find a way around him, giving Turner his first Crown Vic win. Following Turner and Friend underneath the checkers were Chad Merrill, Scott Richner, and Norm Morrill.

The action continues at Airborne Park on Sunday, September 14th when it will be “Championship Night for the 358 Modifieds.” The Sportsman Modifieds, Limited Sportsman, Renegades, and Mini Stocks will also be on the card. Grandstand admission is $15. Children 12 and Under are Free. Pit admission is $30 for members and $40 for non-members. Racing begins at 6 p.m.
